Independence Day
Indian Independence Day is celebrated on the fifteenth of August every year. It commemorates the day in 1947 when India won freedom from the British rule. The day is a national holiday in India and one of great significance as it marked the birth of the biggest democracy in the world. It was on the 15th of August in 1947 that Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the Indian tricolour in the Red Fort in Delhi and read the famous freedom speech at the stroke of midnight. The Independence of the nation came after the country bore the yoke of British rule for three hundred years and the day is celebrated with a lot of pomp and fanfare across the entire nation.

For a long time our Motherland India was under a foreign Government.
She got back her freedom on the 15th August 1947. Since then every year we have been observing the 15th August as our Independence Day.
Why it should be observed:
We should observe the independence Day to remember our great national struggle and our great victory. It is a holy and auspicious day for us. Besides, this day reminds us our duty and responsibility for our country. On this day, we review what we have done during the year past. We think what we should do during the year beginning. On this day, we take the solemn pledge to serve our mother country. Our Independence Day is great occasion for us.
Celebrations of Indian Independence:
The celebrations of Independence are carried out with a lot of festivity and enthusiasm across the length and breadth of the country. All Government organizations, educational institutions and private organizations remain closed as 15th August is a National holiday. Flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programs held in the state capitals are the most important part of the celebration on this day. A major highlight of the day is the Prime Minister`s speech given in Red fort at Delhi, and the entire nation tunes in to the television to watch this speech. In his speech, the Prime Minister highlights the various achievements of the Government in the year gone by and also brings to attention important national issues and calls for the future development of the nation. He also pays a tribute to the various leaders of the Indian Independence Movement. In the capital New Delhi most of the Government Offices are lit up. All over the nation flags are distributed among citizens which they proudly wear in a spirit of patriotism. Schools and colleges all over the country mark the day with cultural activities, drills, parades, flag hoisting and distribution of sweets. Buildings of national importance are illuminated on this day.
