The Valmiki Ramayana is divided into seven kandas or sections. The first kanda is called the Bala kanda, which narrates the birth and childhood of Lord Rama. The second kanda is called the Ayodhya kanda, which narrates the events leading up to Rama’s exile from Ayodhya. The third kanda is called the Aranya kanda, which narrates the events that take place during Rama’s exile in the forest. The fourth kanda is called the Kishkindha kanda, which narrates the events that take place after Rama meets Hanuman and forms an alliance with the monkey king Sugriva. The fifth kanda is called the Sundara kanda, which narrates the story of Hanuman’s journey to Lanka to find Sita. The sixth kanda is called the Yuddha kanda, which narrates the events leading up to the final battle between Rama and Ravana. The seventh kanda is called the Uttara kanda, which narrates the events that take place after the war.

The Bala kanda begins with the story of the sage Narada’s visit to Valmiki’s ashram. Valmiki is shown to be a reformed bandit who has transformed into a sage through his devotion to Lord Rama. Narada tells Valmiki that he has the potential to compose a great epic, and Valmiki sets out to write the story of Lord Rama. The Bala kanda then narrates the story of how Lord Rama is born as the eldest son of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya. The kanda also introduces the other important characters of the epic, such as Sita, Rama’s brothers Lakshmana, Bharata, and Shatrughna, and the demon king Ravana.

The Ayodhya kanda narrates the events that lead up to Rama’s exile from Ayodhya. Rama is chosen by King Dasharatha to be his successor, but the queen Kaikeyi, who wants her own son Bharata to be the king, manipulates the king into banishing Rama from the kingdom for 14 years. Rama willingly accepts his exile and is accompanied by his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana.

The Aranya kanda narrates the events that take place during Rama’s exile in the forest. Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana live a simple life in the forest and come across various sages and demons. The most important event in this kanda is the abduction of Sita by Ravana, who takes her to his kingdom of Lanka.

The Kishkindha kanda narrates the events that take place after Rama meets Hanuman and forms an alliance with the monkey king Sugriva. Rama and Sugriva defeat Vali, the previous monkey king, and Rama gets the help of the monkey army to launch an attack on Lanka to rescue Sita.
