The Valmiki Ramayana is divided into seven kandas or sections. The first kanda is called the Bala kanda, which narrates the birth and childhood of Lord Rama. The second kanda is called the Ayodhya kanda, which narrates the events leading up to Rama’s exile from Ayodhya. The third kanda is called the Aranya kanda, which narrates the events that take place during Rama’s exile in the forest.
